The Challenge

Africa’s health systems face persistent financing challenges, growing healthcare needs and pressure on public resources.

At the same time, external development assistance is becoming less predictable, increasing the need for countries to strengthen domestic investment in health and develop more sustainable financing models.

The challenge is not simply how to raise more money for health.

It is also about how countries can improve the way health resources are mobilised, allocated and used, strengthen domestic investment and build financing systems that are resilient to economic and external shocks.

Health financing is also connected to broader issues including:
